Lincolnshire is England’s second largest county. With big skies and wide open spaces, beaches and agricultural land, there’s plenty to do and see just a short walk or drive from Seaside Lodge.
Gilbraltar Point Nature Reserve – Unspoilt stretch of coastline running south from the edge of Skegness to the mouth of the Wash. Open all year, the reserve impresses by its scale and diversity of wildlife, especially when visited throughout the four seasons.
Donna Nook National Nature Reserve – Covering over 10 km of coastline, Donna Nook National Nature Reserve is rich in bird life: 47 species of bird breed regularly and over 250 species have been recorded in total. For much of the year the grey seals are at sea or on distant sandbanks. But, each November and December, the seals give birth to their pups near the sand dunes: a wildlife spectacle which attracts visitors from across the UK.
The Lincolnshire Wolds – Countryside with rolling hills and valleys, streams and nestling villages, The Lincolnshire Wolds is the highest land in eastern England between Kent and Yorkshire, with views westward to the Pennines and eastwards to the coast. Woodland, grassland and abandoned chalk pits provide important habitats for rare flowers and wildlife.
Alford – This nearby market town has become a centre for arts and crafts. Artists and musicians come from all over the country for the annual craft markets – the Whitsun Show, August Bank Holiday Festival, Jazz Festival, Christmas markets and weekly craft markets throughout the summer. Alford’s Five Sailed Windmill is a magnificent landmark, reputedly the finest working windmill in the country. Alford Manor House was originally built in 1611 and is said to be the largest thatched Manor House in the country.
Louth – Capital of the Lincolnshire Wolds, Louth is in the heart of this rich agricultural area, and popular visitor destination for its award winning butchers, grocers, bakeries and markets. St. James’ is the parish and civic church of Louth, and steeped in history. Hubbard’s Hills, on the edge of town, a pretty valley and area of naturally-formed parkland. Its riverside setting makes for an ideal Lincolnshire picnic location, and we heartily recommend visiting The Cheese Shop in Louth to fill your picnic basket with their stunning cheeses, pickles and breads.
